What is the role of teachers in guiding the future generation towards a successful tomorrow?

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” The aforementioned quote by William Arthur Ward is an awe-inspiring statement, which demonstrates the pivotal roles teachers play in shaping the futures of young and inquisitive minds. If we compare schools and education to tall skyscrapers, then the teachers can be compared to the foundation of that building; that is, the strength of the educational system relies upon its pioneering backbone — teachers.

Teaching is the one occupation that is capable of giving rise to many other professions. It is a rewarding and fulfilling profession and it requires immense dedication and compassion in a person to become a teacher. Children learn the rudiments in kindergarten or in the nursery classes as they are referred to in International schools in Sri Lanka. Kindergarten and primary school teachers are one of the first figures of authority children encounter and these teachers have a colossal impact on their futures. Teachers are responsible for creating positive and safe environments for students and the teachers’ behaviours reflect upon their empathy and ability to listen and understand the perspectives of students. The ultimate goal of a teacher is to not only teach but to inspire and motivate students to become the best versions of themselves and be proud citizens of the country. There are many seminars conducted by professionals to further assist and to provide up to date information concerning new teaching strategies to teachers working in International schools of Colombo.

Moreover, teachers provide support and especially guidance to students concerning their futures. Students have the opportunity of learning about the various experiences of teachers which can help them get a better understanding and utilize them in their future endeavours- specifically on career opportunities and higher education. One of the most important qualities a teacher should possess is patience, which is immensely helpful when dealing with disruptive behaviours in students. The strong work ethic and knowledge from teachers can inspire students to develop strong work ethics themselves, which will be useful in their future careers. Consequently, the roles teachers play in a student’s path to success is immeasurable and profound and will be so in centuries to come.
